S-420, Command and General Staff (Pre-Course Work) 2002

This instructor-led course has pre-course work (estimate 2 hours). There is an additional 8-10 hours of optional pre-course work. Additional information about the course can be found in the Field Manager’s Course Guide (PMS 901-1).

Instructions: 
  1. Submit at least three questions regarding how your functional area works in a team environment that you would like answered in this course. Email your questions to your course coordinator as directed.
     
  2. Read the assigned pages from the publication Findings from the Wildland Firefighters Human Factors Workshop.

    Parts 1-3, Pages 1-22.

    Part 4, Pages 42-53, South Canyon Revisited Lessons from High Reliability Organizations.

    Part 4, Pages 54-58, The Collapse of Decision Making and Organizational Structure on Storm King Mountain.

  3. Optional:

    Read the remainder of the Findings from the Wildland Firefighters Human Factors Workshop especially pages 57-69.

    Read the book, "Young Men and Fire" by Norman McClean, as referenced in Findings from the Wildland Firefighters Human Factors Workshop.
